5 must-see attractions in Porto Heli

The chapel of Agios Emilianos

The chapel of Agios Emilianos is situated at the top of an elevated hill on a small islet and provides an unmatched blend of scenic views and tranquility.

This beautiful chapel is often used for weddings and christenings. Though safeguarded by permanent private security, access is open to all visitors who desire to embark on this enchanting journey.

The submerged ancient City of Halieis

The submerged ancient City of Halieis is perhaps the most significant attraction in the southern region of Porto Heli, towards the coast. Archaeological excavations have been conducted since the early 20th century, with the most important ones initiated by Americans in 1962. During these excavations, ancient temples, a stadium, and many clay and terracotta objects were unearthed. Submerged underwater, the remnants of the ancient harbor walls and the sunken colonnade of the Temple of Apollo persistently reveal themselves.

For diving enthusiasts, swimming in the waters of Porto Heli amidst the ancient findings of the City of Halieis offers a unique experience!

Kranidi

Kranidi is constructed in an amphitheatrical style on the hills of Agia Anna, with a picturesque orientation facing the northwest. The rocky formations and low vegetation in the western and eastern parts of the town create a beautiful contrast with the pine forest of Korakia on the southeast side.

Although Kranidi is located on the mainland of Argolis, culturally, it is oriented towards the islands of the Saronic Gulf, which is reflected in its traditional architecture. That is why it feels like being on an island while strolling around Kranidi.

Many people visit Kranidi as a day trip from Nafplio or Porto Heli.

The most traditional houses in the area date from 1840 to 1890, when Kranidi was flourishing due to its maritime industry. To the north, you will come across Prophet Elias mountain. To the northwest, there is Koilada Bay, with its traditional village and the prehistoric Franchthi Cave, located just 6 kilometers away.

Ververonta Lagoon

Ververonta Lagoon, located northwest of Porto Heli, is one of the top attractions in Argolis. Tradition holds that this lagoon was once a favored hideaway for pirates.

The locals consider its waters to have healing properties, and many choose it for relaxation and swimming. It is ideal for surfing and other water sports, and easily accessible by car as it is located next to the coastal road.

Elli’s Tower

The first private steamboat that arrived at the port of Porto Heli was named “Ellaki,” owned by the prominent physician Anagnostou and his wife. Between 1928 and 1930, they built the first mansion in the settlement, now famously known as Elli’s Tower.

Elli’s Tower prominently rises from the sea, extending a welcoming sight to visitors approaching the cosmopolitan harbor from the Argolic Gulf. As a building, it features a rare architectural style for the Greek area. The Gothic style influences its aesthetics, and its pointed turrets distinguish it from other luxurious residences.
